How much does a wedding venue cost in Detroit? Three numbers, not one

A wedding at The Roostertail is priced in three pieces, not one flat number. There is a per-person package price that already has tax and gratuity built in. There is a site fee, a range rather than a single figure. And there is a ceremony fee, but only if you hold the ceremony here too.

The per-person price runs $149, $179 or $219, depending on the package. All three include tax and gratuity, which is worth saying plainly: what you see is what you pay for food and beverage. The site fee sits between $4,500 and $9,500, and it moves with your per-person spend, your guest count, your date, your start time and which room you book. A ceremony adds $2,750 for the Marine Room patio or $3,850 for the Palm River Room deck, one time, only if you marry on site.

That structure is why two couples asking the same venue for a quote can get different answers, and it is also why this page will not hand you a citywide average cost of a wedding venue in Detroit: we cannot source one that holds up, so we will not quote one. Detroit wedding venue prices, package by package

Package One runs $149 a person for a 4.5-hour reception with a 4-hour house open bar and a plated or buffet dinner. Package Two, marked most popular in the package magazine, runs $179 a person for a 5-hour reception, a 4.5-hour premium open bar, a plated or buffet dinner, and passed hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour. Package Three runs $219 a person for the same 5-hour reception and a 4.5-hour top-shelf bar, plus a dual-plated dinner, salmon and chicken or filet and chicken, and a late-night snack: coney dogs, Detroit-style pizza, a pretzel wall or fries.

Every package includes a champagne toast at the head table and cake table, a venue coordinator for the night, dietary accommodations and cake cutting. Halal preparation adds $5 a person. Children and vendor meals are $75 each. None of those extras change the per-person figure you compare across packages: it is already the full food and beverage number, tax and gratuity in, which is about as clear as a wedding venue cost per person gets in Michigan.

What moves the site fee between $4,500 and $9,500

The site fee is not one number because it depends on five things: your per-person package, your guest count, your date, your start time and which room you book. A higher per-person spend generally brings the site fee down. There is no separate food and beverage minimum stacked on top of it.

What the site fee buys is fixed no matter where it lands in that range: 60-inch round tables that seat ten, plus tall tops, a gift table and a check-in table; silver or gold Chiavari chairs with cushions; house linens in a range of colors; silver or gold chargers and table numbers; customizable LED lighting; guest and vendor Wi-Fi; one bartender for every 100 guests; free self-parking; private restrooms for your event space; the waterfront space for photos; and the venue coordinator running the room on your night.

Here is the math, worked three ways and labeled as examples, not quotes. Each total is the per-person price times guest count, plus the site fee range. Ceremony fees are separate, and only apply if you marry here too.

None of these totals include a ceremony fee. Add that only once, and only if the ceremony happens on site.

Does the wedding price include the ceremony?

No. The per-person price and the site fee cover the reception. A ceremony on site costs extra, one time: $2,750 for the Marine Room patio, over the water, or $3,850 for the Palm River Room deck, with its white arbor and the long boardwalk down to the water.

Both ceremony fees include a 30-minute guest arrival, a 30-minute ceremony, the rehearsal, chairs and setup, an aisle with a grand reveal, photo spots, indoor restrooms and a weather backup plan. Take the 150-guest Package Two example above, $31,350 to $36,350, and add a Marine Room ceremony: the range becomes $34,100 to $39,100.

Marine Room or Palm River Room: does the room change the price

The per-person package price is the same in either room. What changes is capacity and, sometimes, the site fee. The Marine Room holds up to 300 guests at water level, with the 1961 hydraulic dance floor and a view toward Belle Isle. The Palm River Room holds up to 800, upstairs, with floor-to-ceiling glass and the downtown skyline beyond.

A 250-guest wedding fits comfortably in either room. A guest list past 300 needs the Palm River Room. Below 100, both rooms work, and the choice usually comes down to the view you want most: Belle Isle from the Marine Room, or the skyline from the Palm River Room.
